Arise, walk through the land.

Genesis 13:17

Dan

From Dan to Beersheba.

Judges 20:1

The Jordan does not begin in a story. It begins in a rock at Dan, cold enough to hurt your hand, with Hermon holding the snow above it. Everything downstream starts here.

About an hour north of my gate

Engraving of a still lake at first light, a wooden fishing boat, reeds, and a figure standing on the shore.

The Kinneret

He stilled the storm to a whisper, and the waves were hushed.

Psalm 107:29

Every word you have read about this lake was said within sight of this water. I read the chapter aloud where it happened, then I step back and let the lake do the teaching. The text is the guide. I am the footnote.

Twenty minutes down the hill

Engraving of a walled hill city at first light seen from an olive ridge, a lone traveller on the path.

III

Jerusalem

Our feet are standing in your gates.

Psalm 122:2

They sang their way up this valley, fifteen songs for the last climb. I walk you in slowly, and from above, because Jerusalem is not a place you visit. It is a place that visits you.

Two and a half hours south, and a thousand years

Engraving of a deep arid river valley from above, a narrow river winding between cliffs, a small figure with a staff on the path.

The Wilderness

I will lead her into the wilderness and speak to her heart.

Hosea 2:16

Nothing grows here and everything was decided here. The wilderness is not the empty part of the story. It is the part where the talking happens.

The Jordan runs its whole length, from my lake to the salt sea

Engraving of a basalt plateau with an old olive grove and a field-stone wall, looking down to a wide lake going gold in the evening.

Natur

A land your God looks after. His eyes are upon it.

Deuteronomy 11:12

And here the map runs out, because you are standing on it. Basalt, an old olive grove, a low stone wall, and the Kinneret going gold six hundred metres below. This is my hill. The gate is the one you started from.

The land did not.

Everything you just fell through is a real drive from a real gate. Dan is an hour north. The Kinneret is twenty minutes down the hill, and I can be standing in it before the coffee is cold. Jerusalem is a morning away. The wilderness is exactly as empty as it looks, and that is the point of it.

I am a licensed Israeli guide, licence 11717, twelve years in the field, and I live in the middle of the map you just came through. I read the chapter where it happened and then I get out of the way. If you have carried these places in your head for thirty years, come and put your feet on them.

Arise, walk through the land, in the length of it and in the breadth of it.
