Before We Begin
How to Use This Book
it has one job, and it is a simple one
This little book contains nothing except Scripture. No commentary, no notes, no explanations. That is
deliberate. Everything else you will need is in the companion volume, and everything else I have to say I will say
standing next to you. This one is for reading out loud.
Here is how we will use it, at every single site, for seven days.
One. We arrive, and before I explain anything, we open to the page for that place. Somebody reads.
Sometimes it will be me, very often it will be one of you, and I will ask in advance so nobody is ambushed.
Two. We read the whole passage, not a verse. Whole passages have a shape, and the shape is part of
the meaning. It takes ninety seconds and it changes everything.
Three. We read it standing where it happened. That is the entire reason we flew here. A sentence
read in the place it was lived does something a sentence read in a chair cannot do, and I have watched it happen to
several thousand people.
Four. Then, and only then, we talk. And then we pray.
The passages are printed in the order of the journey, day by day and site by site, so you can simply keep
your thumb moving forward. At the back you will find every reference gathered by book of the Bible, so that when you get
home and want to preach one of these, you can find it in ten seconds.
Verse numbers are printed small and raised, so they do not interrupt the reading. Where a passage has
been shortened for reading aloud, the reference says so plainly. Nothing has been changed, only shortened, and I would
rather tell you than have you discover it later.
Read it badly and out loud. That is better than reading it beautifully and silently.
