On Eagles' Wings

Jonah went down to this port to sail away from his calling. Eight hundred years later Peter fell asleep on a roof here and woke up turned toward the nations. Same water, same call, two answers. You have just landed in the land where God gives assignments. Tonight, before you sleep, decide which man you want to be this week.

Isaiah asked the question as if it were absurd, can a nation be born in one day? In the room you are standing in, it happened in thirty two minutes. On the wall hangs the answer to a seven hundred year old question. When people tell you prophecy is poetry, tell them you stood in the room where it became paperwork.

One man against four hundred fifty, and a nation that answered not a word. Elijah's prayer takes thirty seconds to read aloud. Time it. Then remember that heaven is not moved by length, it is moved by whose name you call.

Under your feet is a synagogue from the very years of the ministry, found by accident in 2009. Out of this fish town came Mary, seven darknesses delivered, who funded the road, stood at the cross, and on the third morning became the first human being to see the risen Messiah. God takes the person the town whispers about and builds a tower.

From the top of Arbel the whole Gospel spreads below you in one view: Capernaum, Tabgha, the Beatitudes hill, the lake. Jesus walked between those cliffs and this water for three years. You climbed for the sunrise. Stay for the map.

The hill is a natural amphitheater, sound rolls down it toward the water, test it with your own voice. The kingdoms of the world rolled past on the trade road below while He sat on the grass above and announced a different Kingdom, within earshot. Blessed are the poor, He said, describing His audience. He still is.

Look at the mosaic by the altar: the basket holds only four loaves. The fifth is on the altar, still being distributed. He does not usually make something from nothing. He makes enough from what is handed to Him whole.

Your feet will stand one meter above the basalt floor of the synagogue where He taught. Peter's house is thirty steps away, and the busiest road of the ancient world ran past the front door. Village and superhighway in one glance, that is the strategy of God. And the town's own name, Village of Comfort, was a promise before He ever healed a soul in it.

The river is smaller than you expect. That is the point. God's favorite canvas is the unimpressive, and this narrow green water carries more of the Bible than any river on earth. Joshua's people carried stones out of it so their children would ask questions. Today you go down into the same water. Come up with your stone.

Watch the Arbel gorges to the west from the deck, that is the door the wind still comes through, exactly as the text describes. Four professional fishermen said we are dying, and He spoke to the weather like a man speaks to a dog, and it lay down. Whatever you are rowing against, you now know who is in the boat.

This sea died from only receiving and never giving, water flows in and nothing flows out. Float in it, the water holds you up whether you believe it will or not, and while you float, remember Ezekiel saw fishermen spreading nets here one day. Nothing, in the Book, is terminally dead.

A shepherd boy threw a stone into that cliff and heard pottery break, and out came every book of the Hebrew Bible except Esther, a thousand years older than anything known. The Great Isaiah Scroll reads essentially as your Isaiah reads. The grass withered, the empires faded, and the word of our God stood forever in a clay jar.

Every pilgrim for three thousand years has had this moment, the first sight of the city. Some sang, some wept, some went silent. Do not photograph it first. Look at it first. Then say the psalm out loud, because now it is about your feet.

The garden is named for the olive press, and the olive gives its light only when crushed. In this garden the Anointed One was pressed, and the prayer that saved us came out: not my will, but Yours. Put your hand on the old trees. An olive never really dies, cut it down and it returns from the root.

Tonight you sit at Jewish family tables in Efrat, the very Ephrathah of the prophecy, and watch candles lit as they have been lit for three thousand years. You are not observing a custom. You are guests inside the family through whom your own salvation arrived. Receive the evening like bread.

Grave robbers do not fold laundry. The head cloth rolled up in a place by itself is the quietest detail in the Gospel, and it is the one that made John believe: whatever happened in that tomb happened calmly. On the door you will read four words that outrank every argument: HE IS NOT HERE.

On the one day He accepted the crowd's worship, He broke down crying in the middle of the singing, a King in tears over a city missing its hour. Walk the road down slowly. Rejoicing and weeping can share a donkey.

The church stands over the courtyard where the bravest disciple broke three times before breakfast. Remember what came after: fifty days later the same man stood up in this same city and preached to thousands. The rooster is not the end of Peter's story, and your worst hour is not the end of yours.

Psalm 48 is the oldest walking tour in print, walk about Zion, count her towers, and its purpose clause is why you are here: that you may tell it to the next generation. You are the next generation. Walk slowly, the city hosts more languages on a Saturday than Pentecost did.

The binding of Isaac, the threshing floor David refused to take for free, two temples, one enormous platform. Abraham named this mountain It Will Be Provided, and the name is still doing its work. David's line is your question for the day: I will not offer to God that which costs me nothing.

The original Jerusalem is not inside today's walls, it is this twelve acre spur over the spring. In the burnt layer they found clay seals carrying names from the book of Jeremiah, the fire that destroyed the city preserved the signatures of the men in the Book. You will walk on the Pilgrimage Road itself.

Solomon asked that every prayer prayed toward this place would be heard in heaven, and every note folded into these cracks is someone taking him up on it. Lay your hand on the stone, watch the swifts wheel above it, Psalm 84's sparrow found a home by Your altars, and pray toward, the way three thousand years have.

A Passover seder has four cups, and the cup after supper is the cup of redemption. That is the one He lifted. He took the redemption cup and filled it with Himself, and served it to twelve men about to fail Him. The communion table has never required perfect guests. Only hungry ones.

Yad Vashem means a memorial and a name, and it is a direct quotation of this verse. Six million names that the world tried to erase are kept here forever, inside Isaiah's promise. Walk quietly. At the end, in the Children's Memorial, one candle becomes a sky of stars. Let it do its work in you.

The shortest psalm of ascents was written for exactly this, the ones who stand by night. Jerusalem has houses of prayer that have not gone silent in years. Tonight you can be one of the watchmen. It is the best tired you will ever be.

You will meet people whose whole calling is to run toward what everyone else runs from. That is the most practical sermon you will hear all week, and nobody will preach it, they will just show you their radios. Faith with its sleeves rolled up.

This museum honors people from the nations who stood with this people when it cost them everything. Ruth said it first, your people will be my people, and she ended up in the family line of the Messiah. Standing with Israel has never been a spectator sport, and this week you joined it.

Priests have spoken these words over this people for three and a half thousand years, and this morning they are spoken over you. You came as tourists. You leave as witnesses, and as watchmen. The land does not end at the airport, it goes home in you.
